Matt Andersen (click to hear Matt) with Del Barber openers Celeigh Cardinal and Daniel Zeggelaar Sunday, 25 September 2011 Doors 6:30pm, Concert 7:30pm Tickets $25 in advance
“The most thrilling thing in Canadian blues since Jeff Healy. Matt Andersen is not only big – he’s a big deal. With big-hearted vocals, mischievous guitar virtuosity and a firm understanding of dynamics, he’s a one-man show, sure thing”. - Globe and Mail
We have been pursuing Matt Andersen for over two years now and we are happy to finally bring him to Demmitt, not only to launch our forth season, but also to mark the first performance in our completed new venue, the sustainable and stunning Demmitt Community Centre. When we first approached Matt he was beating a fierce trail across Canada on CBC’s Vinal Cafe with Stewart McLean. Since that time Matt won the prestigious International Blues Competition in Memphis, Tennessee and has been headlining all the major folk festivals in Canada. Matt is simply incredible to watch on stage. His blues, roots and rock musical hybrid with his sorrowing and soulful voice and astonishing guitar-playing has sparked a phenomenal buzz on Canada’s East Coast and that grass roots word of mouth is spreading quick! This show will sell out fast – get your tickets now.
PLEASE NOTE: Arrive early for the show (4:00 pm) and be treated to the official ribbon cutting of the Demmitt Community Centre, a tour of the building and a free BBQ. While everyone is welcome to these ceremonies, you must have a ticket to see the Matt Andersen show. The show will likely sell out, so if you plan to attend the ceremony and show, buy your tickets in advance.
The Grande Prairie Boys Choir (with members of Pro Coro Canada) Saturday, 29 October 2011 Doors 6:30pm, Concert 7:30pm Tickets $20 in advance, $22 at door
The Grande Prairie Boys Choir is one of the most exciting things happening in the Peace Region performing arts scene these days. Just back from a summer that saw this dynamic crew play shows in Arizona and a show with the Canadian Tenors in July, the choir comes to Demmitt in October to push the acoustic limits of our vaulted timber ceilings. This troupe is always full of surprises, as evinced by last spring’s Power Tool Concerto, where the stunning harmonies of choir was creatively combined with construction tools like nailers, palm sanders, air compressors, hammers and power tools. The show will also bring members of Alberta’s professional men’s choir, Pro Coro Canada, who will work with the boys choir before the show and perform with them. We are really looking forward to hearing this magical combination of voices in our new facility.
The Good Lovelies Saturday, 19 November 2011 Doors 7:00pm, Concert 8:00pm Tickets $25 in advance, $27 at the door
“In a day when the too-hip-to-be-happy alt-country crowd churns out verse after verse of dark, bar-fly banalities the Good Lovelies opt for a sound that is like a sonic sun shower”-Edmonton Journal
We were so thrilled to discover the Good Lovelies last summer. Our crack-troop of Borderline Culture agents witnessed their sunny and upbeat three-part harmonies at folk music festivals across Alberta and BC and were very impressed by their great sets combined with constant instrument swapping and witty on-stage banter. Their first album was so exceptional it garnered a Juno award in 2010 for Roots/Traditional Album of the Year. A great act to pick you up before winter sets in in the Peace.
Ken Whiteley
Friday, 23 March 2012 Doors 7:00pm, Concert 8:00pm Tickets $25 in advance, $27 at the door
“A Canadian Pete Seeger with a voice like Tony Bennett cranked to 11.” – Toronto Star
Ken Whiteley is one of Canada’s most respected “roots” musicians. Drawing on his incredibly rich background in blues, gospel and folk styles, this 7 time Juno award winner nominee is always a wonderful addition to any festival or concert series. His performances are presented with participatory humor, grace and energy.
Tuesdays with Morrie An old man,a young man, and life's greatest lesson.
Saturday, 21 April 2012 Doors 7:00pm, Concert 8:00pm Tickets $20 in advance, $22 at the door
Variety calls “Tuesdays with Morrie” a “touching, life-affirming,deeply emotional drama with a generous dose of humour.”
A play about a career obsessed sportswriter who has lost touch with his revered former college teacher. Now, as the older
man slowly gives up his life to ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) they meet again every Tuesday morning for the most important lessons yet: in life, love, and the transfiguring power of joy. Featuring Canadian theatre legend Antony Holland in his Jessie Award-winning performance as Morrie, and four-time Jessie nominee Dirk Van Stralen as Mitch.
Antony Holland has been touring this unexpectedly funny and deeply moving play since 2005. Holland, a member of BC’s Entertainment Hall of Fame, has performed it in a held-over run at Vancouver’s Arts Club Theatre, picking up that city’s Jessie Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Lead Role. He subsequently toured it to other cities and towns throughout Canada.
